You used to love sex. But the sheer ecstasy you used to experience in bed as a woman has now turned into sheer frustration.
The truth is, you’re not alone.
Research shows that 40% of American women struggle with female sexual dysfunction. In fact, more women than men experience sexual dysfunction as a result of differing conceptions of intercourse.
Tadalafil (Cialis) is regularly prescribed to men, but what about women? Here’s a glimpse at facts about safety, the side effects, and the benefits of tadalafil for women.
Let’s jump in!
What is Cialis?
Cialis remains one of the most commonly used erectile dysfunction drugs in men after receiving Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval years ago.
Eli Lilly and Co. manufactures and sells Cialis, whose active ingredient is a compound known as tadalafil. The drug’s other components haven’t been completely disclosed. However, they are believed to be sexual activity-enhancing ingredients.
Tadalafil stands out due to its half-life of around 36 hours on average, coupled with its rapid onset of action.
In fact, some people claim to feel tadalafil’s effects for as many as three days after taking Cialis.
In men, tadalafil keeps levels of PDE 5 low, which relaxes penile muscle walls for extended periods of time. This enables blood to enter the penis and cause erections.
So, what exactly can it do for women? Let’s take a peek below.
Tadalafil for Women?
According to the theory of evolution, humans are currently complex organisms. But we weren’t always that way. Instead, we are said to have evolved from the exact same origin as other species.
Not everybody believes in this theory, but it actually works here for our explanation of the connection between Cialis and women.
Because men and women evolved from the very same origin, the two sexes have a lot in common both functionally and structurally.
In fact, during the early phases of embryological development, girls and boys are nearly similar. You can’t distinguish the two sexes until after a few weeks have passed.
For example, a boy’s penis and a girl’s clitoris have the same origin: a certain structure called the phallus.
In light of this, it may make sense why some women choose to use tadalafil.
The mechanism of this compound is essentially the same in women as it is in men: It inhibits PDE 5 and thus causes women’s genitals to become engorged with blood. As a result, women can quickly become sexually aroused.
What’s so great about tadalafil in women is that it can increase their libido levels if they struggle with low libido due to using drugs like anti-depressants.
In addition, it may boost their chances of experiencing orgasms. And this is a big deal considering that research shows that women experience orgasms just 50-70% of the time when they have sex.
However, tadalafil can also help post-menopausal women to become more vivacious in bed.
In other words, Cialis can help you to experience higher-quality sex each time. And on top of this, it can help to eradicate the stress associated with not being able to function at your optimal level during sex.
Research on Women and Cialis
Earlier, we mentioned how Cialis increases women’s libido levels and makes it easier for them to experience orgasms. However, scientists, who have long been interested in Cialis use among women, have discovered a few other core benefits of this drug in females.
First, Cialis keeps cyclic GMP from degrading thanks to phosphodiesterase 5. This means that a woman’s genitals won’t quickly lose the sensitivity they need during the sexual arousal process.
Second, in women who are in menopause, Cialis can help them to be lubricated enough when they become sexually excited. In this way, they can function just like younger women do during intercourse.
Note that the FDA hasn’t approved tadalafil for women, for logical and scientific reasons. However, some women have already tried Cialis and claim to enjoy its effects.
The decision of whether to try tadalafil for yourself is ultimately up to you. But you can feel free to discuss it with your primary care doctor for their input as well.
What to Discuss with Your Doctor Prior to Taking Tadalafil
If you decide to take tadalafil as a woman, there are still some scenarios where it is not recommended.
First, you shouldn’t take Cialis if you’re under 18 years of age.
Second, you shouldn’t take this compound if you are currently taking riociguat — a drug used for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Third, tadalafil doesn’t work with nitrate drugs, which are used for heart problems and chest pain. Such drugs include the following:
- Isosorbide mononitrate
- Isosorbide dinitrate
- Recreational drugs (like nitrite poppers or amyl nitrate)
Tadalafil can stay in your blood for a couple of days after you take it. However, this length of time can be longer if you’re battling kidney or liver disease. It’s critical that you avoid taking nitrate during this period.
In fact, it’s a good idea, in general, to let your physician know about all of the medicines you are currently taking, as well as any you stop or start using. These medicines are especially important to mention:
- Seizure medication
- Drugs for treating high blood pressure
- Antiviral medication used for treating HIV/AIDS or hepatitis C
- An antifungal medicine
- An antibiotic
Also, note that other drugs might interact negatively with tadalafil, such as over-the-counter medication and a wide range of prescription medicines.
In addition, herbal products or vitamins may not work well with tadalafil. So, it’s also a wise idea to discuss your usage of supplements with your doctor.
To ensure that tadalafil is truly safe to take in your situation, tell your physician if you’ve ever had the following conditions as well:
- Low or high blood pressure
- Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (where your veins become narrow)
- Vision loss
- Kidney or liver disease
- Multiple myeloma
- Sickle cell anemia
- Bleeding disorder
- Stomach ulcer
In addition, you should tell your physician if you’ve ever experienced medical issues that make intercourse unsafe.
Important Considerations for Women
The good news about Cialis is that it’s not expected to cause harm to a fetus. However, if you are currently pregnant, or if you plan on becoming pregnant, you should let your doctor know this as soon as possible.
It’s not currently known if tadalafil can pass into breast milk and impact a nursing baby. Be sure to tell your physician if you’re breastfeeding.
Instructions for Taking Tadalafil
Tadalafil is an oral medicine that you can use daily or whenever you need it.
If you plan to take Cialis each day, you’ll need to take it once per day. Typically, you can expect to take a lower-strength dose, like 5mg or 2.5mg.
Meanwhile, if you plan to use the drug whenever you need it, you’ll likely take a higher dose, like 20mg or 10mg.
Either way, make sure that you follow all of the directions listed on your drug’s prescription label. Don’t take Cialis in smaller or larger amounts than prescribed. And don’t take it for a longer period than recommended.
Also, don’t split or break your Cialis tablets. Instead, swallow them whole when you take them.
If you’re struggling with erectile dysfunction, you can take tadalafil right before you engage in sexual activity. Specifically, you should take it about 16 minutes prior to having sex.
Again, though, make sure that you don’t consume it more than one time per day.
Finally, be sure to store the drug at room temperature. In addition, keep it away from heat and moisture, as well as children and pets.
Is There Any Food You Should Avoid When Taking Tadalafil?
You can take tadalafil with food or without it. What’s great about tadalafil is that food doesn’t impact it like it does slidenafil — the active ingredient in Viagra.
Still, note that if your diet contains too much fat, this can negatively impact how well your Cialis is absorbed in your body.
Also, avoid drinking alcohol while taking Cialis.
And one more thing: Try not to drink grapefruit juice and grapefruit when you’re taking Cialis, as these acidic items can interact with your medication.
What Should You Do if You Happen to Miss a Tadalafil Dose?
If you’re using tadalafil whenever you need it, you’ll likely not be on a certain dosing schedule.
However, if you take the medication each day and you happen to miss one of your doses, simply take this dose as quickly as possible.
If you’re pretty close to your next dose by the time you realize you’ve missed a dose, just skip the one you missed. Avoid taking extra medication to compensate for the dose you missed.
If you do happen to overdose on tadalafil, pursue emergency help right away. You can also get in touch with the Poison Help Line.
Potential Tadalafil Side Effects
If you start to experience indicators of an allergic reaction, you should pursue emergency medical assistance right away. Here are some signs to look for:
- Throat, tongue, lip or face swelling
- Difficulty breathing
In addition, seek medical assistance if you start to experience nausea, dizziness, or chest pain during sex. In this situation, you might be experiencing a side effect that is life-threatening.
Also, quit using Cialis and get in touch with your physician if you start to experience the following:
- The feeling that you may pass out (lightheadedness)
- The sudden loss of your vision
- Vision changes
- The sudden loss of your hearing
- Ringing in the ears
- Symptoms of a heart attack (for example, chest pressure or pain, sweating, or shoulder or jaw pain)
A quick note about vision loss: The sudden loss of vision has taken place in a relatively tiny number of patients taking tadalafil. However, in these cases, most of the patients already suffered from eye issues and/or risk factors for disorders involving the blood vessels.
These disorders include the following:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Coronary heart disease
- Being above 50 years old
- High cholesterol
Therefore, in these cases, it’s not immediately clear whether their tadalafil actually caused their vision loss.
Additional side effects that people may experience after consuming tadalafil include a headache or a flushed feeling. For instance, you might feel tingly, red, or warm.
Also, if you feel like your nose is stuffy, this is another side effect to pay attention to. Other commonly experienced side effects of Cialis include leg or arm pain, back pain, and muscle pain.
Any side effects you experience will typically normalize relatively quickly. However, if you start to experience adverse reactions, it’s in your best interest to see your physician.
